If you would like to get involved as a local community volunteer with a ‘Friends of the Parks’ group, there are at least 17 groups in the Royal Borough of Greenwich with 3 in Charlton. There will be a Friends of Parks group near you.
Friends groups complement the work of council parks staff, helping to keep parks tidy, organising events, publishing information material, helping with gardening and maintenance tasks.
People tend to create or join a Friends group because they take a direct role in improving their local park. The type of task they undertake include:
- conservation schemes.
- food growing enterprises.
- environmental clean-ups, biodiversity projects, community events and activities in their park.
- regeneration of neglected or underused areas.
- improvement of safety by working with parks staff and neighbourhood teams to counteract antisocial behaviour such as vandalism or illegal underage motorcycling.
- infrastructure projects to install a play area, sports facilities or improving disabled access.
If you wish to join an existing group or establish a new Friends group contact the council through
